Temperature is involved in many aspects of our daily lives – our own bodies and health, the weather, and how hot the stove must be to cook food. Temperature is the measurement of the warmness or coldness of a substance. It is measured with a thermometer and expressed in degree Celsius, Fahrenheit or Kelvin. The SI unit of temperature is the kelvin (K).
1. What Is Temperature?
- Temperature is the measurement of warmness or coldness of a substance.
- It is a measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles in an object. It is related to how fast the atoms within a substance are moving.
- A high temperature means that the molecules within the object are moving at a faster rate. Gas particles with more kinetic energy are at a higher temperature.
- Molecules are too small to analyse and calculate their movement directly, so an indirect method must be used to measure the kinetic energy of the molecules of a substance.
