The living world comprises of plants and animals. Plants can prepare food by themselves, grow in size and reproduce. Various parts of plants are used as food, medicine, wood and shelter. This chapter covers the parts of a plant and their functions, the different types of habitats, and the adaptations and modifications plants show in their habitats.
1. Plants and the Plant Body
- Vegetables come from different parts of the plant – some from the stem, some from roots; even some flowers are used for cooking.
- Leaves such as keezhanelli, curry leaves and coriander leaves are used in cooking to add medicinal value and aroma.
- Like our body, the plant body is made up of several organs such as root, stem, leaves and flowers.
- Plants are of many forms and colours, yet all have stems and leaves above the ground and roots below the ground.
A flowering plant consists of two main parts: (1) the Root system and (2) the Shoot system.
